Ohio County Historical Society
During the summer of 2014, I interned at the Ohio County Historical Society. The county was created in 1798 and therefore has a long and rich history. The Society maintains 7 different buildings on their property that hold different exhibits on the county's history, which includes a caboose and a log cabin. My duties included giving tours, research, working on their catalogue, collections care, exhibit preparation, and creating a Facebook and web page. Working in my home county was a great experience. I not only gained valuable knowledge of the day to day operations of a small museum, but I felt that I helped them in return. I also met some wonderful people that really have an in depth knowledge of local history.
My favorite experience was helping a gentleman who was researching a minor skirmish on the border of the county during the Civil War. With both of us researching different aspects of this event, we were finally able to uncover some of the details of the skirmish and he was able to find the answers he was looking for. I was also privileged to be able to scan and transcribe a handwritten short story found in the loft of a log cabin and put those documents on the web page for others to enjoy. I now am a member of the Society and hope to continue to help them in the future!
