Student Financial Assistance

WKU Financial Aid Checklist

How do I apply for financial aid? Why has my aid not yet disbursed? The checklist below provides steps that students may need to complete before their financial aid can be disbursed.

checkboxIn order to apply for federal aid, students must register for an FSA ID and submit a FAFSA (this is your financial aid application).

  • Fsaid.ed.gov: Your FSA ID will serve as your electronic signature for all of your federal student aid electronic documents.

  • Fafsa.gov: No fee to apply. Beware of sites that may charge you a fee.

checkboxWere you selected for a process known as Verification?

  • A Student Aid Report (SAR) will be sent within 2 weeks of the completed FAFSA application and this report will indicate if the student is selected for Verification.

  • Students who have been selected for Verification cannot be awarded their financial aid until they have been verified. Visit KHEAAVerify.com in order to obtain the necessary steps for the completion of the Verification process.

checkboxHave you recently checked your WKU TopperMail? Have you looked for your financial aid award on your TopNet account?

  • Students should monitor their WKU TopperMail and TopNet accounts for notifications from the Department of Student Financial Assistance.

  • Once students have received their award notifications, they need to log in to TopNet in order to view/accept awards (i.e., loans)

checkboxIf you have accepted your federal student loans and are a first-time loan borrower, you will also need to visit Studentloans.gov and complete the following:

  • Entrance Counseling

  • Master Promissory Note (MPN)

checkboxIs your Fall and Spring financial aid enough to cover each semester’s cost?

  • On TopNet, students should review the financial aid award amounts that have been allotted for each semester.

  • If students need additional financial aid assistance, the following options might be available:

      • Federal Direct Parent PLUS loan: The parent has the option to apply for this loan by visiting Studentloans.gov

      • Private Loan: Please visit wku.edu/financialaid/, choose Types of Aid, and then select Loans

checkboxHave you completed all these steps and still owe money to the university for this semester?

If so, you may need to contact a financial aid counselor at:
