Gazing Deeply showcases how WKU’s backyard—the unique landscape of Mammoth Cave—is being studied, interpreted, and inspiring action on environmental change. Coinciding with the UNESCO Conservation of Fragile Karst Resources: A Workshop on Sustainability and Community and Earth Day’s 50th anniversary in 2020, this exhibition is a collaborative effort between arts and science faculty and students that highlights one of the most well-known and vital natural landscapes in the world.

History suggests that as “big business” started to take hold in the late 1800s, women became more involved in business and working outside the home. However, few women owned companies. Those that did were in industries centered on women, such as home goods, apparel, or personal care.

Today, women own only 40% of businesses in the U.S., making Carrie Burnam Taylor’s business of the early 20th century that much more impressive. Curated with Dr. Carrie Cox, this exhibit will explore Taylor's life and work, displaying three of her dresses, two coats, two bodices, and various undergarments recently conserved thanks to our Adopt-an-Artifact program.

Danielle Mužina, an artist and educator currently living and working in Cleveland, Ohio, makes paintings that explore place, identity, and crisis, inspired by both personal lived and inherited familial experiences. Using the homespace as a point of grounding and as metaphor, she writes: "My immigrant grandmother, reflecting on witnessing national traumas in our home of former Yugoslavia, tells me 'to pay attention when the sky's bleeding, even if someone tells you it's not'."

The Department of Art & Design invites you and your students to: Pink Hemorrhage an exhibition of work by visiting artist Danielle Mužina.

Open to the Public | Followed by Closing Reception in Gallery

Danielle Mužina is an artist and educator from Cleveland, Ohio. As an artist, she makes paintings that explore place, identity and crisis, inspired by her experiences as a member of a family that immigrated from Croatia. She received her B.F.A at Ohio Wesleyan University, her M.A. at Eastern Illinois University, and her M.F.A. at Miami University. Mužina has studied at the Jerusalem Studio School in Civita Castellana, Italy, and completed residencies at Chautauqua School of Art, the Vermont Studio Center, and The Sam and Adele Golden Foundation.

PINK HEMORRHAGE envisions heightened parallel worlds in which women reckon with personal and communal agency amidst crisis and uncertainty. The paintings ask questions about the impact of gender performance and trauma on relationships, selfhood, and experiences of space, supported by the amplified intensity permitted within an apocalyptic setting. My immigrant grandmother, reflecting on witnessing national crises in our home of former Yugoslavia, tells me “to pay attention when the sky’s bleeding even if someone tells you it’s not.” These paintings grapple with the roles figures play actively or inactively, together or divided, in both contributing to and addressing internal and external crises.

The "What Happened to Jonesville?" traveling exhibit features 15 panels that will be on display on February 15, 2023, on the first floor of the Downing Student Union and is open to the public.

Jonesville was a vibrant African American community in Bowling Green from around 1881 to the 1960s. Although the buildings are gone and many of the people who lived there have passed on, their stories live on through former residents and their descendants. This exhibit explores and sheds light on their stories.

This exhibit takes place exactly 59 years from the date recorded as a hearing from the Committee of Warren County Planning and Zoning Commission (February 15, 1964) for a proposed development plan.

This event is being presented by the WKU's Jonesville Reconciliation Workgroup. The exhibit is sponsored by the African American Heritage Council/Kentucky Heritage Council, WKU Department of History, WKU African American Studies Program, and WKU Potter College of Arts & Letters Quick Turn-Around Grants.

The spring 2023 season of Lost River Sessions LIVE! continues at 7 p.m. February 16 with Sam Gyllenhaal Band featuring Spooky Fox.

The headliner of the night, Sam Gyllenhaal Band, has found the sweet spot. That place where rich three-part harmony and thoughtful, catchy songwriting come together - but it wasn’t easy to find.  Their pop, rock, and country influences inspire their songs' cascading melodies, driving grooves and vivid lyrics. The band likes to sing about life and love in motion - sometimes soaring, sometimes stumbling, but always moving forward.

Spooky Fox, the opener for Sam Gyllenhaal Band, is a singer/songwriter from southern Kentucky. Otherwise known as Yovany Piko, Spooky Fox recently won the Appalachian Arts and Entertainment Award for “Best Americana 2022” and is currently touring around Kentucky and Ohio. Piko has just released an EP titled Bad Hombre, which was recently featured on NPR WEKU. He is a board member of the Master Musicians Festival in Somerset, was recently on the Jerry Springer Podcast, and was also on Red Barn Radio this past December.

Lost River Sessions is the 11-time Emmy award-winning Folk, Bluegrass, and Americana television, concert, and radio series produced by WKU Public Media in Bowling Green.  Replicating the recording style of older folk records, LRS features live music recorded in intimate, iconic settings across the South-Central Kentucky region.

Locally, Lost River Sessions airs on WKU PBS 24-1 every Saturday at 8 pm CT and Sunday at 9 pm CT.  LRS also airs on WKU Public Radio (88.9 Bowling Green) every Saturday at 4 pm and 7 pm CT.

Graduate Student Seminar Talk: Shaharina Shoha

Title: A Comparison of Computational Perfusion Imaging Techniques.

Abstract: Perfusion imaging is valuable because it is used to help grade tumors; differentiate between tumor types; differentiate tumors from nonneoplastic lesions; guide intraoperative sampling; most importantly, determine the efficacy of treatment. Computational techniques combined with the imaged data can help identify important biological parameters. For example, key parameters include cerebral blood flow (CBF), cerebral blood volume (CBV) and mean transit time (MTT) . These parameters can help distinguish between the likely salvageable tissue and irreversiblydamaged infarctcore.Theparametersarecalculateddeconvolvingcontrast-time curves with the arterial inlet input function. A common approach employed with the deconvolution method is a singular value decomposition (SVD). However, these algorithms are very sensitive to noise and artifacts in the source image which may introduce additional distortions in the output parameters. For this reason, we will employ machine learning algorithms to aid in the measurements of perfusion parameters from CT imaging and compare to parameter measurement using SVD with regularization.

Week Daze

By: Hillary DePiano

Has TJ’s comfortable routine become a rut? When an old friend comes to town with a challenge, TJ’s got to figure out what it really means to live a little. Week Daze zooms out and looks at our  daily routines from a new perspective as all five weekdays play out simultaneously across the stage in a comic ballet.

Annnd Scene (of the Crime)

By: John Busser

Eddie committed murder . . . or did he? In this hilarious one-act play we follow along with our detective's improvised approach to finding the truth.

In Time

By: Ruby Gray

Two different eras come together in this timeless story of finding yourself and falling in love unexpectedly. Through library books and car rides in 2021, Sam and Casey become good friends and show us what it means to find your true self. Through letters and gardens in 1868, Sarah and Cecilia show us what it means to love, and to be able to love.

Admission is $8 and tickets can be purchased at wku.showare.com.
