Recognition of FACS Early Childhood Education Graduate

The child care owned by Lisa Lee, (see photo below) a 2009 graduate, has been awarded accreditation from the National Association of Family Child Care. While earning her Early Childhood Education associate degree at WKU, Ms. Lee opened a child care in her home. According to Dr. Amy Hood Hooten, not only has the child care earned accreditation, but has also earned a 4-STAR rating, the first program in the Barren River Area Development District to earn this distinction.

DMT Student wins at  national competition in Dallas

At the 43rd Annual Career Day held on April 1, 2012, at The Dallas World Trade Center, top students from more than 40 colleges and universities across the country competed for more than $30,000 in scholarship prizes from The Fashion Group International of Dallas Foundation in partnership with the Texas Department of Agriculture.  This year, Cindy Jones, IDFM faculty member, along with WKU Fashion Merchandising students, Bethany Steinhaus, Katherine McQueen, both of Bowling Green, and Alex Panzarella, of Radcliff, (see photo below), traveled to Dallas for the Career Day Competition.   These three students competed in the Natural Fibers Trend Board competition, with, Alex Panzarella, (see photo below) placing second in the Wool Fiber division. All three students' boards were selected to be in the exhibit that was presented for the day.

Career Day is most well known for its exciting student design competitions, culminating in a full-scale runway show produced by well-known producer, Rhonda Sargent Chambers, showcasing hundreds of student designs on professional runway models. This year, Bethany Steinhaus, was selected to model along with the professionals.

 Regarded as the longest running and largest fashion career event of its kind in the country, Fashion Group of Dallas Career Day annually attracts more than 1000 outstanding students and faculty from colleges and universities across 12 states. More than 700 student entries are received for the design, as well as, merchandising and trend board competitions. Students in the fashion and lifestyle industries travel to Dallas to participate in Career Day's 23 educational seminars and workshops, as well as compete for scholarship prizes in a variety of design and merchandising categories. Over its 40-year history in Dallas, Career Day has recognized more than 6,500 young designers and provided an educational forum for as many as 31,500 students.

 

Interior Design Students Selected for Poster Presentation

Ashton Krofhage, ID student from Bowling Green, KY, and  Jade Boyle, ID student from Glasgow, KY (see photo below),  entered an abstract for consideration in the competitive, state-wide Posters-at-the-Capital competition.  Their abstract was chosen by the selection committee, which allowed the students  to show their poster presentation of  a complex they designed to house AIDS orphans in South Africa. The complex housed the orphans and also had access to medical needs, classrooms and activites that they are lacking. This project was an IDEC (Interior Design Educators Council) competition scenario in which the girls chose to participate.

Posters-at-the-Capitol is a forum to help showcase the kinds of cutting-edge work Kentucky undergraduates are capable of doing – work that routinely results in presentations at professional society meetings and publications in professional journals. Each year Posters-at-the-Capitol enables the Governor and members of the General Assembly-- individuals responsible for higher education funding in the Commonwealth--to engage directly with students who have had this important educational opportunity and allows those individuals to see the quality of education the students are receiving in Kentucky higher education.

 Now in its eighth year, Posters-at-the-Capitol has celebrated the research and scholarly achievements of undergraduates from across the Commonwealth. Initially funded through a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the program has grown from 85 undergraduates in 2001 to over 200 participants in 2009 from the six comprehensive public universitiesf (EKU, KSU, Morehead State University, Murray State University, NKU, and WKU), the University of Kentucky, the University of Louisville, and the Kentucky Community and Technical College System.

 

Nutrition and Dietetic major wins scholarship, represents WKU on Executive Council

Sara Glanz, a Nutrition and Dietetics and Spanish double major at WKU, is serving a two-year term as the National Collegiate Chair on the  Phi Upsilon Omicron Executive Council. As part of her duties on this Council, for the next two years, she will write an article for "The Candle," the journal of Phi Upsilon Omicron.   Sara was also awarded a coveted national scholarship from Phi Upsilon Omicron this year.  She  currently serves as the local WKU Beta Delta Chapter president.  

 

Beta Delta Chapter National Award

The Beta Delta Chapter of Phi Upsilon Omicron placed second in the national Professional Project competition for 2011. "Engage in Leadership: Make a Difference" was the national theme for the competition this past year.  Beta Delta's project was entitled "ENGAGE in Servant Leadership for a Better Community".  Activities that the group undertook included each member having the opportunity to take the Dynamic Leadership Institute training on Western's campus, conducting a food drive, working with two large events for the Dream Factory-- a Chirstmas event and the major annual fundraiser-Taste of Bowling Green.  Dr. Karen Mason, Nutrition and Dietetics Assistant Professor, and  Ms. Cindy Jones, Fashion Merchandising instructor, advise the local Beta Delta Chapter, and Ms. Jones is currently the national finance chair for  Phi Upsilon Omicron. 

 

FACS Department Head Honored

Dr. Doris Sikora, Department Head of FACS, was bestowed an honorary membership to the Beta Delta Chapter of Phi Upsilon Omicron at the fall, 2011 Initiation.  Dr. Sikora was previously initiated into Omicron Nu, the other national honor society associated with the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, at the University of Tennesee/Knoxville.

 

Sikora Participates in National Policy Seminar

Dr. Doris Sikora participated in the Association for Career and Technical Education National Policy Seminar in Washington, D. C. in March, where she represented Kentucky Association of Career and Technical Education (KACTE).  Members of KACTE attend the National Policy Seminar to keep abreast of national policies affecting Career and Tech Education, as well as visit all members of Congress to address the issues specific to Career and Tech Education in the state.  One of the current issues on the horizon that is of concern is Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" campaign and how it will affect Family and Consumer Science programs in the schools. The other pertinent issue is to remind the Congressmen of the importance of continuing Perkins legislation and funding. 

 

Obituary

The department has learned of the death of one of our alumnae and former faculty member, Mrs. Deloris S. Floyd.  Mrs. Floyd died March 29, 2012 at the Hospice Center in Bowling Green, Ky.  She graduated from WKU in 1972 with a Masters in Child Development and Family Living and served the Bowling Green/ Warren County community throughout her career. She was named by the FACS Department as one of it's 100 year honorees and will be featured in the booklet to be published.   She is survived by her husband, Wm. A. Floyd (former FACS Department Head), and her children.
