A new Registered Student Organization on campus is bridging the gap between science and community health right here in Bowling Green.

Allison Wahl, a senior from Ferdinand, Indiana, majoring in Biochemistry with a Pre-Med concentration, has founded The Balanced Box Project, aimed at making nutritious meals both affordable and approachable for local families.

The organization's mission is simple but impactful: to reduce the barriers to healthy eating by providing families with free meal kits packed with fresh ingredients and beginner-friendly recipes.

"As a biochemistry major on the pre-med track, I spend a lot of time learning about the science behind health and disease," Wahl said. "The Balanced Box Project allows me to see how nutrition and access to healthy food can impact health long before someone ever steps into a doctor's office. It has shown me the importance of prevention and community health."

The inspiration for the project hits close to home for Wahl. Growing up, her own family received meal kits, an experience that exposed her to new foods and helped her build confidence in the kitchen. Recognizing that processed, convenience foods are often the most affordable and least time-consuming options for busy families today, she wanted to recreate that positive experience for the local community.

The organization operates through massive community and campus collaboration. The Balanced Box Project partners with local schools, businesses, and nonprofits—including the Delafield Co-Op Market and Hotel Inc. On campus, Kelli Truelove, an Instructor in the Department of Psychological Sciences and Faculty Advisor to Wahl’s RSO, and a dedicated group of fellow pre-health students have been instrumental in getting the RSO off the ground. Support has also come from the WKU Meat Club and Meat Lab, which have generously donated beef for the meal kits.

“I have learned that leadership is not about doing everything yourself. It is about building relationships, listening to others, and bringing people together around a common goal,” Wahl said. “Building these relationships has made me incredibly appreciative of the Bowling Green area and the people who make it such a special place.”

Wahl plans to attend medical school after graduating from WKU to become a physician and continue to combine medicine with community outreach. As for the RSO, her goal before graduation is to expand its reach to as many families as possible, ensuring the program creates lasting cooking habits and continues to thrive long after she leaves the Hill.

For students looking to make their own mark, Wahl offers straightforward advice: "Do not wait until you have everything figured out. Start with an idea and take the first step."
