Alternative Testing Options

Before deciding which alternate testing option to use, we want to caution you to think about the technology required of the student depending on the option you choose. If all of your students do not have the technology and internet requirements available to them, we recommend selecting a different option. Both the Distance Learning Testing Center and the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning (CITL) are here to help you brainstorm the appropriate solution for your course.

Alternate options available for your course exams:

  1. Take home paper exam.
  2. Online exam via a learning management system. (Examples: Blackboard, Pearson Labs,  McGraw Hill Connect, SimNet etc.)
  3. Online exam in Blackboard requiring Lockdown Browser by Respondus. Lockdown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within a learning management system (LMS). Here is an explanation video about the product.
  4. Record and review exam via Respondus Monitor. Respondus Monitor is an automated proctoring platform that uses artificial intelligence (AI) and is now live via Blackboard. The product is an additional component to the Lockdown Browser by Respondus and currently there is no cost to the student to use it. Students are recorded while taking their exams and then the AI algorithm looks for testing infraction actions and flags the exam activity for the faculty to review in the Respondus Lockdown Browser tab under Course tools. Since this is a record and review method of proctoring, testing infractions are not identified in real time. Here is an explanation video about the product.

The Distance Learning Testing Center and CITL are here to assist you and answer any questions you may have about alternate testing options and assessment methods. Visit the CITL website for more information and resources related to teaching your online course.
