Materials Management - Surplus

WKU Surplus manages all university assets that departments no longer need. This includes furniture, electronics, vehicles, lab equipment, office supplies, and any other item purchased by the university. Items transferred to Surplus are available for reuse on campus first, after which surplus assets may be auctioned on GovDeals, transferred to other governmental agencies, donated to local non-profit organizations, recycled or disposed.

We take it all. It is helpful when items are labeled with the item's condition, if known. For example, when a monitor is broken, taping a post-it note to it that says, "Broken," will save us the time of testing it for reuse on campus. Even broken items are surplussed for the following reasons:

  • To ensure items are disposed of in their proper waste stream
    • Electronics - Most electronics are considered hazardous waste and should not be disposed of in the landfill. Surplus partners with PowerHouse Recycling to process broken and obsolete electronics not suitable for reuse or resale.
    • Furniture - Bulky items, such as broken furniture, should also be surplussed. Those containing metal will be recycled.
  • To prevent confusion regarding what to surplus (in short, surplus everything)
  • Employee safety - Broken items can be a safety hazard. Surplus employees are trained and properly equipped to move items safely.

Yes! Surplus items are auctioned on a rolling basis on Govdeals.com. Please visit GovDeals for more information and to register as a Govdeals bidder.
