Bowling Green, KY – Western Kentucky University (WKU) Department of Public Health student, Laura Allen, was awarded a Fulbright fellowship for the 2017-2018 school year. Laura, a student in the College of Health and Human Services, will be completing an independent research project, "Considering the Environment of Nursing Homes for the Betterment of Residential Care," with the faculty at Windesheim University of Applied Sciences in Zwolle, Netherlands.

Laura, a Healthcare Administration major, visited Windesheim University through funding from WKU Center for Gerontology, an International FUSE grant and Honors Development Grant in October 2016 to do research for her Honors thesis. The trip allowed Laura to meet and connect with Dr. Carolien Smits, chair of the research group “Innovating with Older Adults” in the Applied Gerontology program. Dr. Smits will be the advisor of her project.

“My research will examine the relationship between administrators and the long term care regulatory body, and the effect that this relationship has on the long term care environment and the residents' aging experience,” said Laura. “The project will employ a comparative approach to understand ways in which U.S. policy can be improved to better the experience of residential aging.”

The Fulbright program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government that aims to increase mutual understanding between Americans and people of other countries.
