KRS Faculty Member, Dr. Steve Spencer, publishes his fourth book in a five-part series: The Odell Buckenflush Chronicles: Adding to the River Tales

Dr. Steve Spencer, Full Professor in the College of Health & Human Services’ (CHHS) School of Kinesiology, Recreation & Sport, has recently released, “The Odell Buckenflush Chronicles: Adding to the River Tales”, which is the fourth book in a five part series that he has authored about tales gathered from a career in the field of outdoor recreation.

The Odell Buckenflush Chronicles’ compilation of tales illustrate the maxim that we should learn from our mistakes, laugh at our misfortune, and not repeat the same mistakes. While this compilation is not a treatise on learning theory, it does provide a variety of examples of learning.

Throughout the Odell Buckenflush Chronicles, experiential learning is mated with humor. While most of the tales have a humorous slant, they also have a moral or lesson directed at those who venture to the outdoors.

The Odell Buckenflush Chronicles is a tool for both education and entertainment. The Odell Buckenflush Chronicles address a life lived aware of our environmental impacts and consequences of actions in outdoor settings. The tales provide a source of fodder for Outdoor Leaders, Teachers, Camp Counselors and Resource Managers to utilize in an ever-shrinking outdoor environment.

Spencer is also founder of the Outdoor Leadership Program at WKU, a 25+ year old program in experiential education. He is an instructor trainer with the American Canoe Association and a Leave No Trace Master Educator.
