Dr. Nahid Gani
- Professor, University Leadership Fellow, Geological Sciences Program Coordinator, Director of Landscape Geodynamics (LeGo) Lab
Biography

Dr. NAHID GANI is a Professor of Geological Sciences specializing in landscape evolution, remote sensing, tectonics, geomorphology, and structural geology. Her research investigates the dynamic interplay among tectonics, climate, erosion, uplift, and surface and crustal processes, with the overarching goal of understanding how Earth system feedbacks shape topography, landscape evolution, and crustal deformation. She also explores the connections between tectonics and environmental change in both geologic and Anthropocene contexts.

Dr. Gani employs an integrated, multi-disciplinary approach, combining low-temperature apatite (U-Th)/He and fission-track thermochronology, geochronology, optical and radar remote sensing, machine learning, numerical modeling, tectonic and structural analysis, thin-section microscopy, field studies, geospatial modeling. These methods allow her to track landscape changes through geologic time, conduct geologic and mineral mapping, advance soil conservation studies, and investigate karst geomorphology. Her work also addresses geohazards such as earthquakes, landslides, and river flooding.

Her research spans diverse regions, including the Ethiopian Plateau in East Africa, the Himalayas, the Bengal Basin, the Colorado Plateau, Kentucky’s karst landscapes (including the Rough Creek Graben, Mammoth Cave, and Pine Mountain Thrust), and even the surface of Mars. She directs the LeGo (Landscape Geodynamics) Lab, where she actively involves and mentors both graduate and undergraduate students in every aspect of research, from fieldwork to advanced analytical and modeling techniques. The international scope of her projects provides students with opportunities to conduct research in countries such as Ethiopia and Nepal, fostering global scientific collaboration and cross-cultural exchange.
