The Academic Calendar


The academic year at Western Kentucky University is divided into four terms: Fall Semester, Winter Term, Spring Semester, and Summer Sessions.  The opening and closing dates, as well as drop/add dates and university holidays are provided in the university calendar, which is available on through the Registrar's Office at wku.edu/registrar/academic_calendars. Classes listed as "web" in the Schedule of Classes follow the main academic calendar. Please select the specific term from the left menu for detailed information.

  • Fall semester at WKU is approximately 16 weeks long from late August through early December.
  • Winter term is an abbreviated 3-week session that takes place between the fall and spring semesters.
  • Spring term is approximately 16 weeks long from late January through early May.
  • Summer term varies depending on which session you choose, but is usually between 3 to 5 weeks in May, June, or July.

Additional options through WKU Online on demand format:  There are also non-semester based classes available through WKU Online on demand format. On demand classes allow you to start any day of the year and finish in as little as 7 weeks or take as long as 9 months.
