Adult learners in the Glasgow area will have access to three new career training programs in the healthcare field this fall.
Clinical Medical Assistant, Dental Assisting and Phlebotomy Technician training programs will be offered at the WKU Glasgow campus through a partnership with WKU Lifelong Learning.
CLINICAL MEDICAL ASSISTANT - Upon successful completion of this program, students would be eligible to sit for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) national examination.
Students learn medical office functions including how to prepare patients for examination and treatment and conduct routine laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing and other clinical functions.
This program covers phlebotomy, pharmacology, the proper use and administration of medications, taking and documenting vital signs and cardiology, as well as professional workplace behavior, ethics and the legal aspects of healthcare. Students will complete 140 hours of classroom lecture and hands on labs and a clinical externship opportunity at a local healthcare provider.
The program begins Tuesday, August 14 and runs through November 17.
DENTAL ASSISTING – This program is ideal for students interested in pursuing a future formal Dental Hygienist program.
This program prepares students for entry level positions in one of the fastest growing health care positions. Students are introduced to all areas of pre-clinical dental assisting and learn professional skills required to function as an assistant in a dental practice.
Students learn administrative and clinical aspects of dentistry, including the history, legal aspects, policies and guidelines of dentistry, as well as an introduction to oral anatomy, dental operatory, dental equipment, tooth structure, proper patient positioning, sterilization and other areas.
The Dental Assisting program begins Monday, August 27 and runs through October 24.
PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN - Students who complete this program can pursue the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Phlebotomy Technician Exam.
This program prepares professionals to collect blood specimens from clients for laboratory analysis. Students become familiar with all aspects of blood collection and develop comprehensive skills to perform venipunctures completely and safely.
Students gain hands-on experience in blood collection, handling specimens and proper puncture technique.
The Phlebotomy Technician program begins Monday, August 20 and runs through October 31.
