The WKU Department of Music along with friends and family members of Joe Stites will host a celebration of his life on Saturday, June 21, 2025, beginning at 3:00 p.m. in the Music Rehearsal Hall on WKU’s campus.
 
Stites passed away on March 1, 2025, and was a 1977 graduate of the WKU Department of Music and a teacher at WKU for 34 years.
 
The event will begin at 3:00 p.m. with a reception, followed by remarks from those who worked with and learned from Stites during his musical career. A group of Stites’ former euphonium and tuba students will close the event with a recital.  
 
Also scheduled on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., the Southern Kentucky Concert Band will perform in the Downing Student Union Auditorium. The concert is dedicated to Stites’ memory and will feature guest conductors and music significant to him.
 
A scholarship fund has been established in Stites’ memory. The fund will assist music education majors at WKU, according to the College Heights Foundation website. Fund donations can be submitted here.

The Topper Orientation Program allows students and families to connect with the WKU campus and community. Students and their guests will learn about class registration and graduation requirements, meet other students, attend an advising session, and register for classes. This program will last all day. We ask that you plan to be on-campus until 4:30pm the day of your TOP. Pre-registration is required. We are excited you are officially joining the Hilltopper family!

A three-week residential camp held in June and July, VAMPY offers high-ability students who have completed grades 7–10 the chance to focus on one course during six class hours each weekday plus a nightly hour-long study hall. Classes are taught by highly motivated WKU faculty and high school teachers who are thrilled to have equally highly motivated students.

Students arrive at the WKU campus from counties around Kentucky, states across the nation, and countries all over the world to form a community of diverse backgrounds and interests. For gifted and talented students who crave knowledge, academic challenge, and peers who accept them as they are, VAMPY offers a life-changing world of both learning and friendship.
