GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPS

Western Kentucky University awards graduate assistantships (GA) to select students across campus to help support their education while gaining valuable professional experience.
GAs in the Department of Counseling and Student Affairs work closely with faculty, supporting research, teaching, and administrative needs. Contracts span one academic year, beginning in the fall semester, with the possibility of extending to a second year based on department need, budget, and performance evaluations.

Available Assistantship Tracks
Assistantship Tracks
We offer two distinct assistantship tracks depending on department needs and student qualifications:
Graduate Research Assistantship (GR/GA)
You will perform duties related to a scholarly project or research program under faculty guidance. This involves applying and mastering conceptual ideas, research practices, and methods of scholarship.
Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GT/TA)
You will help professors manage units within undergraduate classes. Duties may include serving as a discussion leader, grading, leading laboratory sections, preparing assignments, and handling administrative course needs.

Schedule & Responsibilities
As a Graduate Assistant, you serve as a key representative of the Department of Counseling and Student Affairs.
Hours Per Week
Completed on campus to support academic and administrative needs.
Standard Business Hours
Monday – Friday. Available to assist faculty (excluding scheduled class or internship times).
Marketing & Recruitment
Participate in college, university, and local recruitment events, occasionally scheduled on Saturdays.
Eligibility Requirements
To be considered for and maintain a graduate assistantship, students must meet and maintain the following criteria:
Academic Standing
Maintain a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA throughout the duration of the employment contract.
SPRING DEADLINE
How to Apply
To apply for a Graduate Assistant position in the Counseling department, you must submit your completed Application Form to the Department’s GA Coordinator by the spring deadline.
