88 years old. Cherry Hall opened for classes on September 22, 1937.

In 2025, Cherry Hall houses classrooms and offices for English, Anthropology, History, Philosophy and Political Science. When it opened in 1937, Cherry Hall housed all academic departments except biology, agriculture, home economics, physical education, military science and music. Other occupants have included chemistry and physics department laboratories, the college bookstore, the post office and various other offices.
Classrooms and faculty/staff offices will be moved to Grise Hall. The planned move will occur in Summer 2025.
WKU is grateful for the $71.1 million investment in asset preservation funds - $26.1 million in the 2022-24 biennial budget (22 RS, HB 1) and $45 million in the 2024-26 biennial budget (24 RS, HB 6) - from the Kentucky Legislature that makes this project possible. As we await project bidding, the final cost is to be determined.

Renovation will begin in Summer 2025 with a planned opening in 2027.

The renovation will include reimagined and modernized classrooms, collaborative spaces, faculty/staff offices and a revamped reception area. This project will also better illuminate the connection of Cherry Hall to campus by offering more natural light and accessible entrances. Sensory relief spaces will also be made available for our neurodiverse community.

1. The Cherry Hall renovation will feature a digital lab to provide a space for PCAL to advance innovative thinking, cross-disciplinary brainstorming and display the creative works of different student-driven projects.

2. Cherry Hall will provide media-supported rooms throughout the building that are open for both faculty and student use. These spaces will incorporate display screens, audio/visual equipment and updated connectivity that will support the volume of faculty and student collaboration.

3. A percentage of Cherry Hall’s new classrooms will be “zoom-capable” to facilitate hybrid learning. These classrooms will incorporate audio/visual equipment and video conferencing tools to allow for seamless integration of in-person and virtual instruction.

4. Digital directories and wayfinding signage will be provided to assist new students’ and guests’ navigation through Cherry Hall.

5. The large classroom provided on Level 02 will function as an auditorium for PCAL’s film studies courses and will be able to serve as a multi-purpose space for guest lectures and events.

1. The future Cherry Hall will foster engagement between faculty and students by allocating faculty throughout each floor, with many offices located close to the classrooms. This not only creates a space for faculty and students to gather but allows new and existing students to easily locate and engage with faculty.

2. The Cherry Hall Renovation re-purposes under-utilized space to provide open and closed collaboration opportunities to students and faculty and will support neurodivergent users.

3. Updated AV technology in the classrooms will facilitate the PCAL academic programs, connecting with Regional WKU campus classrooms and supporting hybrid learning.

4. Cherry Hall’s new large classroom and pre-function space on Level 02 will be a multi-purpose space for learning and community engagement.

5. A new rear vestibule on the lower level of Cherry Hall gives direct access to the newly renovated hilltop landscape and outdoor classroom.

The well-worn marble steps will be preserved to honor the rich history of the building and the footsteps of previous Hilltoppers. Additionally, the other marble elements from the building will be repurposed to ensure they remain a constant in the evolution of the university.
The front of Cherry Hall, including the statue of Henry Hardin Cherry, and much of the exterior of the building, will remain during the renovation. The renderings show the plans for changes to the rear exterior and interior space.
The renovations to Cherry Hall will allow improvements to the landscape at the top of the Hill. The Faculty House will no longer be part of the rear landscape. The Faculty House ceased being used in 2023. It has deteriorated in condition and experienced a significant decline in use from 2017-2023. Though maintaining this structure is no longer fiscally responsible, rest assured that we will honor its history within the renovated Cherry Hall.
There are no construction or renovation plans set to impact the bridge behind Van Meter Hall known to many Hilltoppers as the “Kissing Bridge.”
