Department of English Awards and Scholarships

Each year the English Department awards several scholarships based on achievement within the department. We invite our majors and minors to apply for departmental scholarships (listed below) at the beginning of each spring semester for the following academic year. You will be considered for all scholarships you are eligible to receive. Amounts the scholarships pay vary. Awards are made between February and May.

  1. Fill out your application here
  2. Include a 300 to 500 word typed, single-spaced essay of your academic background, achievements, and goals. The quality of your essay is a major consideration.  Your essay should be specific to the prompt in the TOPDollar application.
  3. Submit the complete form no later than Friday, February 19, 2016.

FRANK L. ATKINSON SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria:

            English major who is active in the department

            Senior standing

            Resident of the state of Kentucky

            Overall GPA: 3.0 (MINIMUM)

            English GPA: 3.0 (MINIMUM)

 

MARY LUCILLE SCOTT SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria:

            English major

            Resident of Kentucky

            Top 25% of high school graduating class

            Overall GPA: 3.0 (MINIMUM)

            English GPA: 3.0 (MINIMUM)

                        *Can be renewed for up to four (4) years

 

THOMAS G. JONES SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria:

            English major or minor (preferably in creative or professional writing)

            Sophomore standing or above

            Overall GPA: 3.0 (MINIMUM)

            English GPA: 3.0 (MINIMUM)

                        *Can be renewed for up to four (4) years

 

 NOMA DUNN SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria:

            English major or minor (specifically grammar, semantics, usage)

            Aspiring to teach (not specific to high school)

            Good character

            Willing to work

            Overall GPA: 3.0 (MINIMUM)

            English GPA: 3.0 (MINIMUM)

 

PAT AND WALLACE NAVE SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria:

            English major

            Junior, senior standing, or graduate student

            Overall GPA: 3.0 (MINIMUM)

            English GPA: 3.0 (MINIMUM)

 

EARL A. MOORE SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria:

            English major

            Resident of Kentucky

            Overall GPA: 3.0 (MINIMUM)

            English GPA: 3.0 (MINIMUM)

 

DR. KAREN PELZ SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria:

            Creative or Professional Writing major or minor

            Senior standing

            Overall GPA: 3.3 (MINIMUM)

            English GPA: 3.3 (MINIMUM)

 

JIM WAYNE MILLER SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria:

            Creative Writing major or minor

            Junior or senior standing

            Overall GPA: 3.2 (MINIMUM)

 

ADDIE HOCHSTRASSER ESTATE FUND FOR THE JIM WAYNE MILLER SCHOLARSHIP IN CREATIVE WRITING

Criteria:

            Creative Writing major or minor

            Junior or senior standing

            Overall GPA: 3.2 (MINIMUM)

            Full-time student

Must possess the personal qualities of character, integrity, dependability, industriousness, and human compassion, which produce leaders

 

DR. NANCY HIGHTOWER DAVIS SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria:

            English major

            Sophomore standing or above

            Overall GPA of 3.2 (MINIMUM)

            Full-time student

Must possess the personal qualities of character, integrity, dependability, industriousness, and human compassion, which produce leaders

*Financial need is an important consideration

 

BETTY JEAN AND DOUG MOSLEY SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria:

            Full-time student at WKU

            In pursuit of a degree in the English department

            Overall GPA of 2.5 (MINIMUM)

Must possess the personal qualities of character, integrity, dependability, industriousness, and human compassion, which produce leaders and merit the honor of the award

*Financial need is an important consideration
