Potter College of Arts & Letters

Potter College of Arts & Letters takes as its primary area of scholarly concern the study of men and women--their past, present, and future, as well as their aesthetic expression, metaphysical concerns, and social interaction. The College prepares students to enter a wide range of careers and programs of advanced study.  A diverse and distinguished faculty provides excellent instruction in some twenty disciplines in the humanities, social sciences, and visual and performing arts.  The twelve departments combined offer some 27 majors and 32 minors, including five interdisciplinary programs.  And in cooperation with Graduate Studies, the college offers graduate degrees in most departments.  In addition, Potter College plays an important role in the university's General Education program.

Faculty Spotlight

Dr. Carl Kell, WKU communication professor, will be discussing his book, Against the Wind - The Moderate Voice in Baptist Life, during the Potter College Faculty Series this fall.

On Nov. 9, Dr. Kell’s Onward Christian Soldiers – A Rhetorical History of the Southern Baptist Convention Holy War will open Arts & Letters: The Potter College Faculty Series. The lecture will begin at 7 p.m. at the Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center Recital Hall. A book signing and reception will follow.

Professor Kell's research in this area has produced two other books to complete a three book series on the Southern Baptist Convention. The other books in the series are: In the Name of the Father – The Rhetoric of the new Southern Baptist Convention (Southern Illinois University Press, 1999); and Exiled – Voices of the Southern Baptist Convention Holy War (University of Tennessee Press, 2006). Against the Wind – The Moderate Voice in Baptist Life was published this year by University of Tennessee Press.

Earlier this fall, Dr. Kell discussed his research on the Southern Baptist Convention as part of the James A. Hutchins Lecture Series at The Center for the Study of the American South at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and during the Southern Festival of Books in Nashville, Tenn.
