Through a partnership with Elizabethtown Community and Technical College, WKU will bring the ROTC program to the Hardin County area.
Beginning this fall, any ECTC or WKU student can register for MIL101, an introductory course that teaches mountaineering operations and leadership. The course is open to any major and has no registration restrictions.
“This is a great course for any student that has a sense of adventure and enjoys a challenge,” said Brandon Smith, WKU ROTC recruiting operations officer.
According to Smith, the MIL101 course can open up 100% tuition scholarship opportunities for students who plan to advance in the program at the WKU main campus in Bowling Green.
The course will be taught by U.S. Army Master Sergeant Anthony Polite and will teach fundamentals of basic rappelling, belaying, rope bridges and application of leadership in practical exercises. Students will also take field trips to off-campus locations.
Smith said that additional courses are also planned, including MIL102: Development Skills; MIL201: Basic Leadership; and MIL202: Team Building and Military Doctrine. The military classes may be counted as electives in some ECTC and WKU programs.
This 2-credit hour course will meet during the fall semester every Friday from 9-11 a.m.
To register, call 270-706-8870 or visit the WKU Elizabethton office located on the ECTC campus at 610 College Street Rd, Elizabethtown, KY 42701. Additional information about the WKU ROTC program is available at wku.edu/rotc/.
