WKU to Offer New Online Master of Social Work
- Friday, March 25th, 2016
Social workers who have completed their bachelor of social work within the last six years have a new online option for completing their master of social work (MSW) at WKU.
The full-accredited 30-credit hour online MSW program is offered through a partnership between the WKU Department of Social Work and WKU Cohort Programs, so students take their classes with other students in their cohort or group. The class format is synchronous, meaning students meet online with their instructors and other students via video at scheduled dates and times. This allows students to attend class from anywhere, yet receive the same benefits as if they were physically sitting in class together.
Amy Cappiccie, associate professor social work and cohort studies coordinator, said this program is unique from any MSW in Kentucky.
“The course delivery format, curriculum, class size and student support make this program stand out from others,” Cappiccie said. “Our program is ideal for working social workers who need their MSW and plan to work in rural communities.”
The online MSW program provides knowledge in all aspects of social work rather than focusing on one area. Through training in broad aspects of the field, social workers are prepared to be the central contact for rural communities with a broad range of needs.
“This knowledge is imperative in rural communities where there may be only one social worker who must oversee every aspect of the job,” Cappiccie said.
Licensed practitioners with actual social work experience and who serve on national boards teach the courses. Students will also have access to WKU’s award-winning online student support.
“Cohort sizes are limited to 15 students/cohort, which is significantly smaller than other programs,” Cappiccie added.
Priority registration is going on now for the first cohort. Students who register by April 15 will be registered for a chance to win a $100 book scholarship. The final deadline is June 1. Classes are 100 percent online, with instruction taking place Tuesdays from 4-6 p.m. or 6:30-8:30 p.m. Students are required to attend an initial orientation in-person in August, and upon completion of the course, students take a practice readiness exam, which prepares them for the American Association Social Work Board (ASWB) exam.
