Animal Assisted Therapy Dog
As an adjunct to therapy, the CTC is proud to offer the option of Animal Assisted Therapy. Our AAT dog, Star, is a Poodle/Australian Shepherd mix, purposefully blended for the intelligence of those breeds. At nearly two years old now, she has been on staff since age 7 weeks. Immediately upon obtaining Star from the training facility in Frankfort, we began her obedience/handling classes, and she is annually re-evaluated at Pawsibilities Unleashed.
Her purpose as an AAT dog is to lessen the symptoms of anxiety or depression by her presence. This serves two goals: alleviation of mood severity, and thereby easing communication in the therapy sessions. Having Star in session occurs at the request of the student, and all therapists have access to her. Requests for Star continue to increase, she accompanies staff to outreach events when feasible, and has been a great conversation starter to advertise the CTC services!
