Dr. Ann Ferrell, Associate Professor and Program Director of Folk Studies, and Mr. Brent Bjorkman, Director of the Kentucky Folklife Program and the Kentucky Museum, will present “The Community Scholars Program and What Happened to Jonesville?

The Community Scholars program is a statewide training program for documenting traditional arts and culture. Over six weeks, participants learn documentation techniques, oral history, grant writing, and project management skills. To date, over 250 Kentuckians have become certified Community Scholars.

This presentation focuses on the work of Community Scholars in documenting the former community of Jonesville, a thriving African American neighborhood destroyed by expansion of the WKU campus. In collaboration with the Jonesville Reconcilliation Workgroup, the Jonesville Community Scholars contributed to the What Happened to Jonesville? exhibit that opened at the Kentucky Museum at WKU in October 2022.
