Simpson County Historical Society
Shaker Museum, South Union
From May to August 2014, I worked as an intern at the Simpson County Historical Society in Franklin, Kentucky and Archives and South Union Shaker Village in Auburn, Kentucky. While my duties varied at each location, the main purpose of the internships was to work with archiving manuscripts and objects.
At the SCHSA, my primary responsibilities were to complete an application for a historical marker from the Kentucky Historical Society for the old stone jail and jailer's residence, to catalog all museum objects on PastPerfect museum software, and to provide guided tours of the facility. My goals at South Union were to conduct an inventory of all manuscripts as well as to digitize the unbound documents.
Overall the experiences at both locations were positive and gained valuable knowledge as to the inner workings of small scale museums. I was given the opportunity to work closely with the staff of the museums as well as the public to be able to provide the best experience for the visitor and to ensure the safety of fragile documents and objects. The skills I polished through my internships at both the SCHSA and South Union will be a true asset as I search for a career in the future.
