Breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack are provided for all children. Meals and snacks are planned in consultation with a registered dietitian and meet all federal nutrition standards. Children are encouraged but never forced to eat a wide variety of nutritious foods. Parental requests for individual variations in the menu for medical, religious or personal reasons are honored, but may require additional documentation. Families are always welcome to eat with their child when they want and as their schedules allow. Meal time is designed to be a pleasant social experience shared by children and adults. Self-help skills such as pouring, serving and cleaning up are encouraged.
Staff ensures all doors are shut and locked. Visitors must check in at the appropriate office and sign in. Those visitors will then be escorted to the appropriate classroom, office or observation room. In the event of a threat, WKUCCC will ensure the safety of all children and staff during the situation by placing the program on LOCKDOWN. We will implement lockdown drills and other emergency protocols on a regular basis at least quarterly. The director will review drill logs and conduct physical checks on all classroom doors and other locking areas on a regular basis and provide follow-up as necessary.
If your child has a fever and/or symptoms of illness, he/she will not be admitted into the classroom. In addition, if the child is showing symptoms upon arrival, or had the symptoms within 24 hours before arriving, they will not be admitted. If you child's immunizations are not up to date, your child will not be able to attend until the immunizations are acquired.
Our staff cleans surfaces with a microfiber cloth/mop, rises surfaces thoroughly, and let them air dry. Or dry with a paper towel or a clean microfiber cloth. They sanitize surfaces that touch food (dishes, cutting boards, or mixed-use tables), or objects that a child might place in their mouth (toys). Our staff disinfects equipment and surfaces that are used in toileting, diapering, and in cleaning bodily fluids. They allow disinfectant to sit on the surface and be visibly wet for 2 minutes.
At minimum, we maintain a ratio of 1 staff member for every 4 children in our infant and toddler classrooms, and 1 staff member for every 10 children in our preschool classrooms. Whenever possible, we work hard to have 3 staff members in each classroom.
The goal of guidance and discipline procedures is for children to build self-control. Positive guidance techniques such as re-direction and natural and logical consequences are used firmly and consistently. Corporal punishment of any kind is strictly forbidden. Parents who might use other methods, such as spanking, must adhere to all WKUCCC discipline policies while their child is in our care. Spankings are not allowed anywhere on the WKU campus.

Our infant/toddler program emphasizes nurturing care through low child-to-staff ratios, small group sizes, and responsive, caring teachers. The program provides developmentally appropriate equipment, materials, and activities designed to support and stimulate the rapid physical, cognitive, and social development that occurs during this stage of growth. The curriculum used is The Creative Curriculum for infants, toddlers & twos.
Our preschool program is based on the well-established principle that children learn best through play. We utilize The Creative Curriculum for Early Childhood, which emphasizes individualized instruction and the use of positive guidance strategies. Classroom activities, materials, and equipment are intentionally selected to support the development of problem-solving, critical thinking, and logical reasoning skills.
Our staff are well-qualified and meet the requirements set forth by KY child care licensing and Head Start performance standards. Our teachers have a bachelor's or associate degree in early childhood education, child development or a related degree, a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential, OR both.
All teachers have completed criminal background checks as required by WKU, child care licensing and HS standards. WKU students and foster grandparents also assist in classrooms. These individuals have completed: TB tests, physicals, criminal background checks, and training according to state and federal requirements. All staff receive ongoing intensive training in child development, positive guidance, CPR, first aid, and a variety of other relevant topics.
All medication (including over the counter) will be administered by the child's teacher and requires both written consent of the parent and a prescription signed by a physician to be kept on file. The prescription must state the brand name of the medication (including diaper rash cream and sunscreen) and specific administration instructions (including amount to be given and times). All medicine must be in the original, labeled container with the child's name on it. Dosages and times will be recorded and initialed by the child's teacher. All medication must be signed in daily by the parent/guardian.
If your child has any type of medication that is considered a Rescue Medication, parents will need to complete a specific health care plan with the teachers and family services staff. This may include but is not limited, an inhaler or an epi-pen.
