Association for Computing Machinery

What is ACM?

ACM is the Association for Computing Machiney. We are a student chapter of the offical ACM organization whose focus is on bringing together a community of computing educators, researchers, professionals, and students.

What does the student chapter do?

We in our local chapter are focused on creating and offering experiences for students in this field that will not only help them to be better prepared for a future in the computing world but also to allow students to have concrete expereience though our SIGs. Allowing them to get this experience with the technologies that intrest them and that may not be found in the traditional class setting. We achieve this by creating student lead groups that work individually on projects across the wide range of ACM interests and help to guide them as they turn their ideas into fully realized creations.

What exactly is a SIG?

SIG stands for Special Interest Group. These groups serve as ACM sponsered projects or focuses that our members work on over multible semesters. This allows our members to work with other members to develop software or solve problems. These SIGs can be quite varied. In our own chapter we've had SIGs with focuses ranging from mobile game development to developing automated drones for trash clean up. If you have an interest in working on a project relating to machine learning or another emerging technology then we encourage you to join ACM and gain vital experience as a member of one of our project teams.

What if there isn't a project that I'm interested in?

Then we encourage you to come and to present an idea that you'd like to worked on sp see of it could become a new SIG group of its own. This will allow others with similar interests as you to help you to take that interest and turn it into a perfect addition to a future resume.

What if I don't have enough time to dedicate to a project?

You can still benefit from ACM. Starting this semester we will begin reaching out to both employers and employees from the computing field and having them come in as guest speakers to share personal experience and answer our student's questions about their experience and expectations from the field.

When does ACM meet?

ACM meets once every two weeks to discuss the progress of each group and to discuss coming events in detail. We also have individual meetings for each of the SIG projects.

Who can join ACM?

We encourage anyone who plan to go on to the computing field after graduation or anyone with any kind of interest in computing to come join us for a meeting! ACM is open to everyone.
