Nursing Peer Mentoring

Learn from students who have been in your shoes.
Nursing school can be challenging, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. WKU
Nursing Peer Mentoring connects you with successful nursing students who are ready
to share their knowledge, experience, encouragement, and strategies for success.
Come to Peer Mentoring to:
-
Ask questions and talk through challenging course concepts
-
Review rationales and strengthen your clinical reasoning
-
Explore study and test-taking strategies
-
Find new approaches to time management and organization
-
Talk through academic challenges and identify next steps
-
Learn from students who understand the nursing school experience
Faculty may also join mentoring sessions to provide additional support and guidance.
Peer Mentoring for Fall 2026 will be:
-
Wednesday, 2:00 - 5:30 pm in MCHC 2271
-
Fridays, 12:00 - 3:00 pm in MCHC 1104
Mentors can share what has helped them and try to help you find strategies that work
best for you. Remember that everyone learns differently.
Your mentor may ask questions rather than immediately giving you an answer. This
helps you strengthen your understanding and develop the clinical reasoning you will
need throughout nursing school. During mentoring, you may:
-
Talk through challenging concepts
-
Practice applying what you know
-
Explore different study and test-taking strategies
-
Ask questions about navigating nursing school
-
Develop a plan for your next steps
Peer Mentors are successful nursing students who have already completed the
courses they mentor. They can explain concepts, share strategies, encourage you, and
help you identify appropriate resources.
Peer Mentors cannot:
-
Complete assignments or provide answers to graded work
-
Share or recreate restricted exam questions or materials
-
Predict what will appear on an exam
-
Interpret grades, course policies, or faculty decisions
-
Speak on behalf of your course faculty
If a mentor is unsure about an answer, they will help you verify the information or
connect you with someone who can help. We would rather verify than guess.
Peer Mentoring should be a welcoming and respectful space for everyone.
-
Treat students, Peer Mentors, and faculty with kindness and respect.
-
Give others an opportunity to participate and ask questions.
-
Respect the privacy of others.
-
Keep discussions about students, faculty, courses, and the nursing program
professional. -
Come ready to take responsibility for your own preparation and learning.
Peer Mentoring supports but does not replace your course faculty. Connect directly
with faculty for questions about:
-
Your individual academic performance or grades
-
Assignments or course expectations
-
Course policies or procedures
-
Examination concerns
-
Academic accommodations
-
Concerns requiring individualized faculty guidance
If additional academic support is needed, your Peer Mentor may also help you
connect with faculty using the Peer Mentor Faculty Referral Form.
