Dr. Veletta Ogaz, PhD, APRN-FNP

Veletta Ogaz began her nursing career in the U. S. Army serving as a combat medic and then as a Licensed Practical Nursing from 1990-1995. She then furthered her nursing education and graduated from University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, TX with a Baccalaureate in Science in Nursing in 1999, and a Master’s of Science in Nursing degree from California State University, Fullerton with Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Certificate from University of California, Irvine in 2007. In May 2017, she completed her Ph.D. in Nursing from Azusa Pacific University, Azusa, California.
Her teaching career began in 2009 as an assistant professor at California Baptist University in Riverside, California. During her tenure there, she taught in both the Undergraduate and Graduate Nursing Programs. Teaching experience in the undergraduate nursing courses included Fundamentals of Nursing, Physical Assessment, Transcultural Nursing, and senior clinical practicum courses. Teaching in the graduate level nursing courses included Advanced Physical Assessment, and the FNP courses Primary Care I: Women’s Health, clinical instructor for Primary Care II-IV Adult/Acute/Chronic focus, and Comprehensive Exams. She began teaching at WKU in 2015 in the graduate nursing program and currently teaches Research, Research Applications and clinical instruction for FNP Practicum.
Veletta continues to practice as a FNP, currently with a family practice focus. In the past she has worked in subspecialties such as gastroenterology, retail health, and indigent community base clinics.
Research interests include inflammatory bowel disease, thalassemia in children, and indigent/underinsured access to care.
Veletta is a member of the Kentucky Coalition of Nurse Practitioners & Nurse Midwives, American Association of Nurse Practitioners, Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Society, and Crohns and Colitis Foundation of America.
