Prospective SKyTeach Students
The SKyTeach program is for Math and Science majors whose goal is to receive their degree and teaching certification within four years. Freshmen students will only take one class per semester, in addition to the classes in their major, for four years in order to complete program requirements. Students are encouraged to enroll in SMED courses their first semester of freshmen year to explore the opportunities in teaching.
You begin by taking Step 1 (SMED 101) which is a one credit course that invites science and mathematics students to explore teaching as a career. At this early stage, you will acquire first-hand teaching experience preparing and co-teaching science and math lessons in local elementary school classrooms using an inquiry-based method. Master and mentor teachers provide ongoing support and feedback.
Meets weekly on WKU campus for two hours and involves three visits to a local elementary school.
After this course, you take Step 2 (SMED 102) which is a two credit hour course, where student prepare and teach three lessons in middle school classrooms. [For more information on course descriptions, please follow this link.]
Current Undergraduate Students
The SKyTeach program has a flexible entry plan that can accommodate every student in all phases of their academic career. Students do not have to be freshmen to start the program. There are several ways the required courses can be worked into current degree plans. [For more information on course sequences, please follow this link.]
