Severe Thunderstorm Watch: Severe thunderstorms are possible in your area.
Severe Thunderstorm Warning: Severe thunderstorms are occurring.
Tornado Watch: Tornadoes are possible. Remain alert for approaching storms.
Tornado Warning: A tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar. If a tornado warning is
issued for your area and the sky becomes threatening, move to a Designated Tornado
Shelter on Campus!
Watch for tornado danger signs:
Dark, often greenish sky
Large hail
A large, dark, low-lying cloud (particularly if rotating)
Loud roar, similar to a freight train
Building Emergency Action Plans
Click on the "Emergency Action Plans" Link for your safety areas in case of a tornado. These locations are generally in basements and lower floors away from glass or in enclosed areas away from windows.
Warren County Emergency Management
Western Kentucky University maintains 26 Community Outdoor Warning System (COWS) units to alert citizens of threatening weather. In the event of a tornado warning or other emergency, these warning device are activated. In addition to the COWS warning, W.K.U. Police will initiate a pyramid telephone warning system. Each of these contacts will then initate a pyramid to notify their respective areas.
