WKU Campus Severe Weather Radar/Severe Weather Info

Severe Thunderstorm Watch: Severe thunderstorms are possible in your area.
Severe Thunderstorm Warning: Severe thunderstorms are occurring.
Tornado Watch: Tornadoes are possible. Remain alert for approaching storms.
Tornado Warning: A tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar. If a tornado warning is issued for your area and the sky becomes threatening, move to a Designated Tornado Shelter on Campus!

Watch for tornado danger signs:
Dark, often greenish sky
Large hail
A large, dark, low-lying cloud (particularly if rotating)
Loud roar, similar to a freight train

 

Building Emergency Action Plans

Click on the "Emergency Action Plans" Link for your safety areas in case of a tornado. These locations are generally in basements and lower floors away from glass or in enclosed areas away from windows.

 

Warren County Emergency Management

Western Kentucky University maintains 4 Community Outdoor Warning System (COWS) units to alert citizens of threatening weather. Three are on Main Campus and the other one is at South Campus. In the event of a tornado warning or other emergency, these warning device are activated. In addition to the COWS warning, W.K.U. Police will initiate a pyramid telephone warning system. Each of these contacts will then initate a pyramid to notify their respective areas. To read the University Policy and Procedure Severe Weather Warnings.
