Chinese Flagship Program
Chinese Language Flagship Program and Army ROTC partnership at WKU
Thanks to an agreement between the U.S. Army and the National Security Education Program, future WKU students with interests in the Army ROTC and the Chinese Language Flagship Program may take advantage of a new opportunity to reach the Superior level of Chinese Language proficiency while completing their ROTC training at WKU.
In addition to the competitive academic scholarship packages available for ROTC students at WKU, Cadets who apply to the Chinese Flagship and remain in good standing in both programs are eligible for guaranteed support for multiple study abroad programs, including a fully funded Capstone Year in Taiwan or the United States. As part of this new agreement, Cadets may postpone their commissioning to occur following their Capstone Year, typically a fifth year taken after fulfilling their academic coursework at WKU.
The Chinese Language Flagship Program at WKU is an immersion-style program designed to bring students with no prior exposure to Chinese to the Superior level of professional proficiency by the time they graduate. Open to nearly any major, students develop their language skills through intensive coursework on campus and participation in study abroad and professional internship opportunities. Although the goal is a challenging one, students of the program are meeting and exceeding these language proficiency goals while building leadership skills and cultural literacy.
Students who take advantage of this opportunity open themselves up to many career options in military and the civilian sector. Fluency in a critical need language such as Chinese within the Army can provide a higher pay grade and lead to new career opportunities.
Designed as a four to five-year program, applicants to WKU may apply now to both programs.
