Computer Device Requirements

Beginning in Fall 2024, the Gordon Ford College of Business is moving to a "bring your own device" model. All students are required to have a laptop for coursework.

LAPTOP REQUIREMENTS QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Here are the GFCB’s recommended specifications:

  • Operating System: Windows 10 or 11
    • Note: Many programs within the GFCB use software for coursework that is only available for Windows PCs. Due to this, we recommend against purchasing computers with other operating systems such as Apple or Chromebook computers.
  • CPU: Intel i5 or better (or AMD equivalent)
  • Memory: 8 GB at minimum, 16 GB is recommended
  • Storage: 256 GB at minimum
    • Note: All WKU students have access to 1 TB of cloud storage through their WKU email address via OneDrive.
  • Access to a webcam and microphone are highly recommended.

We do not endorse any specific manufacturer or a retailer. However, if you purchase directly from well-known brands such as Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, or Microsoft you can qualify for student discounts which might not be avaialble from retail outlets.

While a Windows PC is preferred, a Mac may work for your classes, depending upon your major, the specific course, and any software applications needed for the major. If a Mac will not work for a specific course(s), you may be able to borrow a PC through the WKU TopperTech loaner program.

WKU’s TopperTech office also offers loaner laptops to WKU students at no cost. Students are allowed to reserve one computer for up to 16 weeks at a time (one full fall or spring academic semester). For more information on TopperTech’s laptop reservations, please visit their website here: https://toppertech.wku.edu/reservations

You may be eligible to use financial aid to purchase your laptop. Please stop by the Student Financial Assistance office located in 317 Potter Hall or contact the office by phone at 270-745-2755 or email fa.help@wku.edu. More information can found at https://www.wku.edu/financialaid/
