According to the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) report How Should Colleges Assess and Improve College Learning,
"When it comes to the assessment practices that employers trust to indicate a graduate's level of knowledge and potential to succeed in the job world, employers dismiss tests of general content knowledge in favor of assessments of real-world and applied-learning approaches.... [These] include evaluations of supervised internships, community-based projects, and comprehensive senior projects."
Specifically, sixty-nine percent of business executives interviewed for the AAC&U report responded that "real-world projects, such as internships, were very effective" for determining job readiness and potential for success.
In an attempt to provide our students with the type of experiences that employers prioritize, we operate a vibrant internship program. Further, we have placements in both general Sociology organizations and those specific to Criminology. While we encourage you to talk with your academic advisors about the utility of completing an internship, we have also designated Dr. Holli Drummond (Grise Hall 111, email@example.com) and Dr. Ed Bohlander (Grise Hall 115, Edward.firstname.lastname@example.org) as our internship coordinators on main campus, Dr. Donielle Lovell (email@example.com) as internship coordinator at our Elizabethtown campus, and Dr. Nicole Brezeale (WKU Glasgow 230, Nicole.firstname.lastname@example.org) and Mr. David Ducoff (WKU Glasgow 204, email@example.com) as coordinators in Glasgow.
If you are considering an internship for an upcoming semester, we encourage you to start by viewing this document which describes the process for obtaining an internship in our department. Next, you should complete this request for an internship placement and submit it to one of the internship coordinators listed above along with a request to schedule an appointment to discuss internship possibilities.
