The Student Government Association plays an active role in student advocacy and university governance through a wide-array of university committees. From time to time, various university officials will request student representation on various committees, boards, and councils. The President of the Student Government Association appoints student leaders to these various positions with approval of the Student Senate.
Board of Regents
The governing body of Western Kentucky University is an 11 member Board of Regents. Eight of the members are appointed by the Governor from among nominees submitted by a nominating commission. These members serve up to two six-year terms. Faculty and staff representatives are elected by their peers to three-year terms. The student representative is the President of the Student Government Association and is elected to a one-year term. All members have voting privileges.
President Keyana Boka was sworn in as regent at the special July 2013 meeting. Her term ends June 2014.
Student Life Foundation
The Student Life Foundation is responsible for overseeing the quality of life of students
in on-campus residences. The Student Life Foundation is responsible for the renovation
and construction of residence halls and campus apartments. Executive Vice President Mark
Reeves serves as the student representative on the executive board.
University Budget Council
The University Budget Council is responsible for overseeing the financial budget of the university. The council is responsible for creating a budget for the next fiscal year. The Administrative Vice President, Nicki Seay, serves as the student representative on this staff council committee.
The University Senate, not to be confused with the Student Senate, is a policy-making
body made up of faculty representatives from each academic department. The President
of the Student Government Association appoints three students to serve in this body.
Campus Master Planning Committee
This committee is charged with developing the University Master Plan, which is the main plan for construction projects and goals across campus. The President of the Student Government Association traditionally serves on this committee.
Parking and Transportation Advisory Committee
The Parking and Transportation Advisory Committee is chaired by the director of Parking and Transportation Services. The President of the Student Government Association traditionally serves on this committee.
