Thursday, April 4th
5:00pm - 6:30pm
  • Location: Gary Ransdell Hall 1074
  • Time: 5:00pm - 6:30pm

The PCAL Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee and the Africana studies program presents documentary filmmaker, photojournalist, and author St. Clair Detrick-Jules, who will give a talk on "Black Hair + Storytelling as a Form of Social Activism." She will be discussing her journey photographing and interviewing Black women with natural hair for her recent photojournalism book, My Beautiful Black Hair: 101 Natural Hair Stories from the Sisterhood, a large-scale visual anthropology exploring the deep, complex relationships across generations between Black women and their hair. She will also discuss how hair can be used as an entry point into related topics, such as self-love, anti-Blackness, healing from racial trauma, feminism, and community relationships, and offer a blueprint for using storytelling as a form of social activism.

The presentation is open to everyone, and will be held in the Gary Ransdell Hall auditorium (room 1074). We hope you can join us! Sponsored by the PCAL DEI committee, the Gender & Women’s Studies Program, the Intercultural Student Engagement Center, the OneWKU committee, the School of Media and Communication, and the Departments of History, Sociology & Criminology, and Folk Studies & Anthropology.
