Business students will soon have the opportunity to shadow various businesses in the area during the PEAK Job Shadow Blitz on October 10 and 11.

“Job shadowing can be a useful way to learn about a specific industry, business, or a job,” said Monica Duvall, the Professional Education and Knowledge (PEAK) Coordinator in the Gordon Ford College of Business. “Students will spend a few hours following a professional to observe their work to help determine whether they would enjoy doing the same thing as a career.”

The Job Shadow Blitz is held during WKU’s annual fall break so that students have more opportunity to spend time with businesses without missing classes.

Students do find the experience valuable.

“I was able to see the inner workings of the business first-hand,” said May 2019 International Business graduate Alex Sergent of his job shadowing experience with Kentucky Downs. “That gave me valuable insight into the real world workforce that I could not have gotten otherwise.”

Sergent spent the day at Kentucky Downs in Franklin, Ky., where he was able to shadow four different areas: operations, marketing, finance, and human resources.

“I learned a lot about the gaming industry and was able to witness business principles in action,” Sergent said. “It’s different than any other industry I’ve seen but going to the job shadow taught me that I would enjoy this industry.”
