Lifeguard Training Course
Class Description: The Lifeguard Training course provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to emergencies. This course will follow the course curriculum released by the American Red Cross in January 2012.
Dates: June 14th, 15th &16th, 2013 (Must be present for all three days)
Cost: $225 Current WKU Students/Faculty/Staff $250 Guest/Community
Location: WKU Preston Health & Activities Center
Course Hours: June 14: 5-7pm; June 15: 9am-9pm; April 14: 8am-9pm
Registration: First-come First-serve basis; 10 available spots
Pre-requisites:
1. Participants must be 15 years of age by the last day of the course.
2. Participants must sign up at the Preston Center.
3. Participants must successfully complete physical swimming skills PRIOR to course start. Must be able to display skills test on the first day of class.
- Swim 300 yds continuously, using these strokes in the following order:
a. 100 yds of front crawl demonstrating rhythmic breathing and a
stabilizing, propellant kick. Rhythmic breathing must be utilized
as well.
b. 100 yds of breaststroke using a pull, breath, kick and glide
sequence.
c. 100 yds of either front crawl or breast stroke. The 100 yrds may
be a combination of the two strokes. (NO Time Requirement-
MUST be continuous)
- Tread water for 2 minutes straight only using the legs
- Swim 20 yds using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth
of 10ft, retrieve a 10lb object, return to the surface, and swim 20yds
back to the starting point with holding the object out of the water, and
exit the pool without using a ladder or steps, within the 1 minute 40
second time limit.
**Participants will be tested for the Pre-requisite skills on the first day of class. For the safety of those individuals that do not sucessfully pass the pre-requisite skills, those individuals will NOT be allowed to continue with the course.
Refunds will not be given to those who fail the pre-requisite test or class.
Course Expectations: Participants must attend and participate in all subsequent sessions including class room work and skills practice. To receive the associated certifications, participants must satisfactorily perform all CPR, First-Aid, Water rescue skills, and pass two 50-question written exams with at least a score of 80%.
Certifications received upon fulfilling certification requirements: (valid 2 yrs)
Lifeguard training, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
Enrollment in each class is limited to the first 10 paid participants.
