history and information about CAN
CAN was created to informally connect all WKU advisors in order to provide training on advising topics and to provide an avenue for support for the work they do.
All CAN sessions are structured in the same way. For the past three years CAN has been on a Wednesday afternoon. The session will begin at noon and end at 1:30 pm. Lunch is provided by different sponsors for each session.
The Campus Advising Network also has a list-serv that allows us to communicate with over 100 advisors at WKU immediately. Several advisors have used the listserv to get answers to advising questions. To be added to CAN list-serve please contact Kevin Thomas at kevin.thomas@wku.edu or at (270) 745-5065.
During the 2006/2007 academic year six sessions were offered on topics related to advising. The attendance of these six sessions was 152 faculty/staff advisors.
In 2007/2008 CAN was expanded to seven sessions. The session offered where Advising Students in Distress, Leadership Opportunities, Meeting the Advising Needs of Students with Developmental Courses, Understanding Financial Aid, Honors Advising, the New Curriculum, and Prestigious Scholarships, How to be a Resource to Students with Disabilities, Intercultural Skillfulness in Academic Advising. These seven sessions brought 219 faculty/staff advisors at WKU to CAN.
During the 2007/2008 academic year an award was also created for advisors that attend all CAN sessions. The "Compass Award" was presented to LySandra Martin and Tracy Rucker of the Potter College of Arts and Letters as well as Michelle Kahler of the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences.
