Literacy Clinic

Expert Support for K-12 Readers and Writers

The WKU Literacy Clinic offers one-on-one diagnostic and intervention services to assist students in K-12 struggling with reading and writing.

For more than 40 years, the WKU K-12 Literacy Clinic has offered literacy support to the Warren County community and surrounding areas.  The primary goal of the clinic is to provide clinical diagnostic services and intervention for striving readers.  Graduate students in the MAE Literacy degree program serve as clinicians who gain hands-on experience working under the supervision of graduate faculty.

Is Your Child Ready for a Reading Boost?

Watching a student struggle with reading can be discouraging for both them and you, but recognizing the signs is the first step toward progress.

Key Indicators:

  • A child has trouble remembering a word he/she has encountered multiple times.
  • A child avoids reading and seems upset when asked to read.
  • A child rushes through reading without noticing errors along the way.
  • A child can read a passage but can’t describe what they read afterward.

What are the Benefits?

  • Personal, individualized instruction
  • Comprehensive diagnostic evaluations
  • Real-life reading applications
  • Foster enjoyment of reading

Services

Services are provided to students in second through twelfth grades. Students should have some basic beginning reading skills and one or more areas of need.

Fall Semester: Fall semester services generally begin mid to late September, are seventy-five minutes in length, meet once a week, and include approximately ten sessions throughout the semester. Children meet one-on-one with a graduate student clinician for literacy diagnostic evaluation with some intervention.

Spring Semester: Spring semester sessions meet for seventy-five minutes weekly for approximately ten weeks. The focus of the spring semester is intervention based on diagnostic evaluations from the fall. The clinic’s ability to provide spring semester services is dependent upon graduate student clinician availability.

Cost

All families are welcome, regardless of income level. If your child is accepted for full tutoring in our after-school tutoring program there is no cost.
