Auditions

AUDITIONS FOR OUR PROGRAM

Admission to the Theatre & Dance department at WKU follows these steps:

1.  You must apply to WKU and be accepted.  Initial acceptance to the department is as a B.A. Theatre student.

2.  At your first advising session (ATP), you should declare your intention to pursue a BFA in Performing Arts with a concentration in Musical Theatre.  This will help you be advised into the correct freshman courses.

3.  Every semester at WKU, you will participate in a jury.  For more information on juries, read the JPR Manual: BFA Performing Arts.  (Be sure to look at the manual for students entering WKU 2006 or LATER.)  At your third jury (mid-way through your sophomore year), you will audition to be accepted into the B.F.A. concentration in musical theatre.

  • If you are accepted, you will change your major status from B.A. to B.F.A.
  • If you are not accepted, you may audition again. (You will receive feedback on your audition to help you prepare for your re-try.)

4.  INCOMING FRESHMEN:  If you were a GSA (Governor's School for the Arts) scholar in high school, you may apply for a GSA scholarship to the Theatre & Dance dept.  These scholarships range from 50% tuition coverage to 100% tuition coverage for all four years.  Deadline is in January, and you must apply for the GSA scholarship AND be accepted to WKU in order to be considered.

Although we will look at your GPA and high school records, this scholarship is primarily talent-based, so you MUST audition.  You can audition at the Louisville Youth Performance Arts High School (YPAS/GSA Auditions), or you may attend Dance Day at WKU.  For more information about Dance Day, contact tracey.moore@wku.edu.   For information about YPAS/GSA auditions, contact:  www.jefferson.k12.ky.us/Schools/Special/YPAS/index.html

THE HILLTOPPER SHOWSTOPPERS

Watch for upcoming auditions for this show-choir group.  To audition for the Showstoppers, or to help out as a technical assistant, contact tracey.moore@wku.edu

HERE ARE SOME OTHER WAYS TO GET INVOLVED:

HELP OUT IN THE MUSIC THEATRE LIBRARY

There are always scores and music waiting to be re-shelved. If you've got time, stop by and lend a hand. The music theatre library is located in GWH 313.

NEW YORK SHOWCASE

Each year, a junior in the BFA Musical Theatre concentration is selected to come to New York and assist with the New York Showcase. If you are interested, please see Tracey Moore or David Young.

ACCOMPANYING

The Theatre & Dance department is always looking for good accompanists. It helps if you can sight-read, but that isn't always necessary. Let us know if you've got a talent and you're interested in being a part of the musical theatre program.

TRANSPOSING

Many times, students in the Music Theatre concentration need to have their songs transposed. If you know Finale or another software and you're interested in making some money, please contact Tracey Moore at tracey.moore@wku.edu.
