Revolution 91.7 will celebrate College Radio Day with 2 events on Oct. 11

Revolution 91.7 – the student-run radio station at WKU — will celebrate the inaugural year of College Radio Day (CRD) on Oct. 11 with a carnival-themed concert featuring Buffalo Rodeo and Rainbow Kitty Kitty on WKU’s Downing University Center patio and lawn from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Later that day, WWHR-FM will take the party to The Skate Box on Three Springs Road for a college-radio skate from 6-8 p.m. Admission for the skate event is $3.

Revolution 91.7 is serving as the 2011 Kentucky State Headquarters for College Radio Day. On Oct. 11, fans will gather at locally organized celebrations across the United States to acknowledge and appreciate college radio as one of the last refuges for unique programming, eclectic music, and cultural momentum.

According to the CRD website: College radio is one of the last remaining bastions of creative radio programming, free from the constrictions of having to be commercially viable and a place where those involved in its programming believe passionately in its mission. College Radio is the only free live medium brave enough to play unsigned, local and independent artists on a regular basis. College radio is an important part of the North American media landscape because of its unique and fearless programming.

Revolution 91.7 tracks the pulse of the progressive-indie music scene that is created in basements, garages and home studios all over the world. Since 1988, WWHR-FM has offered a commercial-free mix of market-competitive artists to the southcentral Kentucky area, ultimately molding mainstream music with breakout acts like Adele, Cage the Elephant and Foster the People. By being the first stations willing to invest airtime in new talent and gamble on their future success, college radio drives culture by contributing to the rise in popularity of eventual arena rockers like My Morning Jacket, Dave Matthews, Phoenix and U2.

The Bowling Green community recognizes Revolution 91.7 as a hub for local music and community engagement. WWHR organizes two music festivals each year to benefit a local charity chosen by the student management. (This year, the station is working with the Rainhill Equine Facility Rescue and Sanctuary.) Revolution also hosts an annual Pooch Pageant to fundraise for the Hildreth Animal Adoption Center, participates in various Bowling Green community events, and highlights WKU’s diverse and dynamic student activities on campus.
