Chinese Flagship student Kevin Worthy became the first WKU student to win a Boren Scholarship. He will spend a year in China beginning in Spring 2013.
Four WKU students have been recognized by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program in 2012.
Nicholas Wright, a 2012 graduate in Chemistry, was selected to receive the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. The award provides over $120,000 to support graduate education in the sciences and social sciences.
For the sixth year in a row, WKU students have been awarded Fulbright grants to spend a year studying and working abroad. May 2012 graduates Mario Nguyen and Alyssa Surina have received this prestigious honor.
Two WKU students, Emmett Stephens and JP Stovall, were awarded U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarships; a third, Rebecca Center, was named an alternate for the prestigious program.
The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation selected WKU junior Cory Dodds as a 2012 Truman Scholarship Finalist. Just two Kentuckians earned that honor this year.

Freshman Music Education major and Presidential Scholar Sarah Fox has become the first WKU student selected by the US-UK Fulbright Commission to attend a Fulbright Summer Institute for Undergraduates.
Justin Pile, double majoring in Biology and Chemistry, received scholarships from the Foundation for Global Scholars and the Golden Key International Honour Society to fund his participation in the Partners in Caring Program in Kenya in January 2012.
WKU student Sarah Schrader was selected to spend Spring 2012 teaching English in rural Korea with the TaLK program.
Our Mission
The Office of Scholar Development (OSD) is committed to helping students on all campuses and in all majors and degree programs develop the vision, experience, and skills to be independent, engaged scholars. OSD encourages research and creative activities and helps WKU students achieve locally, nationally, and internationally. Beyond assisting students to conceptualize a research/creative agenda, OSD supports students throughout the process of finding and applying for scholarships, internships, and a variety of post-graduation opportunities. From grants to graduate school, OSD staff members will work with individual students to write strong applications and proposals.
Additionally, we offer support to faculty and staff members in their endeavors to assist individual students and promote research, creative activities, and achievement university-wide. We collaborate with faculty and staff to apply for grants to create opportunities for students, develop workshops related to our mission, and celebrate the successes of WKU students and their faculty advisors.
