“This week just laid the foundation for the rest of your careers,” said David Larson, an Emmy award winning journalist and co-owner of Early Light Media, a Baltimore based video production company. David was one of five video coaches in the video storytelling workshop at the 2016 edition of the annual Mountain Workshops. The workshops, which are now in their 41st year, are an internationally recognized collection of simultaneous photojournalism, video storytelling, picture editing, data visualization and time-lapse workshops, announces the launch of its new website, http://mountainworkshops.org/. The workshops cover a gamut of skills that enable photographers to better tell stories about the surrounding community while learning from professional visual storytellers, many of them recognized as some of the best contemporary journalists of our time.
Many of the students participating are WKU photojournalism students. “Mountain was an unbelievable experience,” WKU photojournalism major Kelsea Hobbs told the College Heights Herald. “I not only grew as a photographer, but made so many connections with photojournalists that have shaped the way I approach my subjects and my photos. Because I grew technically while there, I was able to take photos in new situations, like from a helicopter over Paducah, Kentucky. I was also able to leave these new situations with photos I’m proud of.”
About 160 participants, faculty and staff converged on Paducah, a western Kentucky river community, and produced documentary shorts, still images, visual graphics and time-lapse photography that are presented on the site. They will also be featured in a book and a traveling gallery.
The application process is portfolio driven and all participants must present a portfolio of work to be considered for admission to the workshop.
