WKU Computer Purchasing Guidelines

WKU supports two computing platforms for our faculty, staff, and administrators: Dell and Apple. Deviations from these standards require approval by the office of the Vice President for Information Technology.

Dell Computers

If you wish to purchase a Dell computer, access the WKU Dell Premier Store, or contact the WKU Inside Sales Representative at Dell:

Apple Computers

If you wish to purchase an Apple computer, please click HERE and search for Western Kentucky University. Once found you can browse the WKU Apple Store anonymously or create an account using a new or existing AppleID. With this account you can create proposals that can be submitted to purchasing. It is recommended that you use Firefox on a PC or Safari on a Mac. You can also contact the WKU Inside Sales Representative at Apple for further help and instruction:

Sustainable Purchasing

In support of the University’s commitment to sustainability, the IT department purchases Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) Certified computers. EPEAT Certified electronics meet required criteria and optional criteria for environmental performance characteristics, including reduction or elimination of environmentally sensitive materials, use of recycled content or renewable materials, design for end of life, product longevity, energy conservation, end of life management, packaging, and corporate performance.

For More information Visit the EPEAT website at: http://www.epeat.net/default.aspx

Netbook Info

In response to interest expressed for smaller form factor computers, a Dell 2110 "Netbook" has been added to the list of IT supported computers that can be purchased for University use. Before ordering this type of system, please keep mind that it represents a trade-off in terms of screen size (resolution), hardware features and operating performance. While some lightweight applications will run adequately on this type of system, more demanding applications may not, and because of this it should not be viewed as a substitute for a traditional laptop or desktop computer. Just like other supported computer configurations, a quote for this system can be obtained though the WKU/Dell Premier purchasing page and ordered by submitting a Banner requisition.
