TOP at WKU helped new students in the transition from their previous environment to Western Kentucky University and acquaints new students and parents/guests with programs and services available at WKU. You will be able to interact with other new parents and WKU while learning about the transitions that you and your family will go through by joining ours.
At TOP, students will be informed of campus services and resources that are included in tuition costs and will enhance their academic career. Your student will also begin to learn about the importance of being involved with campus opportunities and strategies for success. You will also be able to attend sessions to learn about the academic requirements, what to expect from advising, strategies to help your student succeed, and how to support your student without stepping in.
No matter what your student's interests, there is bound to be someone at orientation that shares some of them. College is a time to meet students of other backgrounds, from other states, and cultures, so there is no reason for them to worry about not fitting in. Encourage your student to speak to others and find out about clubs and activities to find students with similar interests. You'll also have the opportunity to meet other parents that are going through the same transitions as you and your student. Throughout sessions and at the Information Fair, you can speak with faculty and staff in addition to the orientation staff that will be with you all day.
Sometimes students come with a plan of classes that interests them, and others ask current students what to take and what to avoid. It is normal for students to feel overwhelmed. After all, college is a big step toward an exciting future! An advisor's job is to guide your student through the academic world each semester, and that relationship will begin at TOP. When your student first goes to advising, there will be a session about how advising works and what to expect when your student returns with a schedule.
Don't worry about class scheduling at this time, that's the responsibility of their academic advisor. Students will attend academic advising alone, and at the end of the day you and our staff will be able to go over the schedule together and make changes if necessary. Every student will reach the TOP Summit and receive an official printed copy of their class schedule. Use this time to sign up for a meal plan, take a campus tour, and/or celebrate with us that you have an Official Hilltopper in the family!
