Advice for Exploratory Students

What’s one piece of advice you would give to an incoming Exploratory student?

Don’t be scared about not having declared! In some ways you’re better off because students who wait to see what they’ll really be doing within their major, usually have a better idea of what they want to do. Plus, most incoming students don’t really know all of their options with majors and minors, so when you can really explore the different departments without being attached to one at all times, makes you feel more comfortable about choosing the one you like most.

What tips would you give students about getting involved on campus?

One of the best ways to get involved on campus is to join clubs! If you have a class that you’re interested in, ask the professor if there is a club within the department that is similar to what to talk about in class. Not only will it help you see what you’re interested in declaring as a major but you’ll be able to meet a lot of new people that way!

What campus resources helped you find a major?

Talking to my advisor was the best thing I did for myself when deciding what to declare. She was able to go through each major I was interested in and let me know what kind of classes I would be taking, which let me know if it was the right path, that I wanted to follow. Being able to talk to someone who had a better idea of what each department was is very reassuring!

What campus organizations are you involved in?

I’m currently a peer mentor for the University Experience classes. This basically means that I will lead the classes sometimes and be a middleman between professor and student, so if a student isn’t comfortable talking to a professor, they can talk to me who can relate to their situation a little more.
