Frequently Asked Questions

Which test(s) do I need to take?
The test(s) you need to take depends on whether you are taking the test for the purpose of teacher admission or teacher certification. The Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators exam is used for the purpose of being admitted into the teacher education program. The Praxis Subject Assessments are focused on your content area and are for the purpose of completing teacher certification. For a list of the test(s) you must take, go to http://www.ets.org/praxis and select the appropriate state from the drop down menu. From there, click on the “tests for their certification area” link. You can also find the passing score you need for each test from this location.

How do I register for a test?
You must register online, by mail or by phone through the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The registration process is NOT done through any WKU office. For registration instructions and to register online, visit http://www.ets.org/praxis/register.

How much does the test cost?
The costs vary dependent upon which test(s) you are taking. For a list of testing fees, visit http://www.ets.org/praxis/about/fees.

Is there any fee assistance available to pay for the Praxis exams?

Yes, if a student is eligible for financial aid assistance, then he/she may get approval for a fee waiver. According to the ETS Praxis website, the waiver may cover the test fees for up to three Praxis® Core tests, or one Praxis® Subject Assessment. Review this information sheet to learn more about this possible fee waiver.

Where do I take the test?
All Praxis tests are now computer-based and must be taken at one of the designated testing centers. Many of the Praxis exams can be taken on the campus of Western Kentucky University; however, you can take the test anywhere it is offered around the country. Tests that are offered at WKU are conducted by the Counseling & Testing Center located in Potter Hall room 409. For other testing locations, visit http://www.ets.org/praxis/register/centers_dates/.

When is the test offered?
This will vary based on the test(s) you are taking. Some Praxis tests are offered on a continuous basis, while others are only offered in certain “testing windows” throughout the year. For a list of test dates, visit http://www.ets.org/praxis/register/centers_dates/.

Are there any accommodations offered for those with disabilities or those whose primary language is not English?
ETS does offer testing accommodations for test takers who meet certain qualifications/requirements. These accommodations might include: extended testing time, additional rest breaks, audio test, separate testing room, etc. For a list of requirements, testing accommodations and the registration procedure for those needing accommodations, please visit http://www.ets.org/praxis/register/disabilities/.

What do I need to bring the day of the test?
Be sure to print out and bring your admission ticket along with a picture ID such as a driver’s license. NOTE: Your WKU ID is NOT an accepted form of ID for this purpose. Calculators may or may not be permitted depending on the test you are taking. For a complete list of things to bring (and not bring) as well as other things to know about the test day, visit http://www.ets.org/praxis/test_day/.

How can I contact ETS about The Praxis Series tests?
ETS can be contacted via phone, fax, email and mail. For contact information, visit http://www.ets.org/praxis/contact.
