Fly Fishing Montana

Explore the exciting lifelong pursuit of fly fishing on Montana's world renowned rivers. This exciting outdoor adventure includes becoming acquainted with fly fishing and fly tying equipment, proper fishing techniques, and environmental practices.


Anticipated Learning Outcomes

  • Acquire an understanding of fly fishing equipment.
  • Be able to tie key knots needed for fly fishing
  • Effectively tie common fly patterns.
  • Demonstrate proper fly casting techniques
  • Effectively present flies when fishing on flat and moving water.
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of entomology as it relates to fishing.


  • Must be 18 years of age or older, regardless of parental consent
  • No academic pre-requisites
  • Open to all majors
  • Open to non-degree seeking students
  • Complete Study Away application process
  • Good Academic Standing
  • Each student is subject to review by Judicial Affairs (if currently under any sanction)
  • Permission of instructor(s)
  • No previous fishing experience is necessary!
  • American Traveler (noncredit) option available

Program Design

  • This workshop focuses on fly fishing including fly tying, casting and fishing. Fly-fishing equipment will be provided.
  • Open to all students, faculty, and staff
  • No fishing experience necessary

Additional Information

  • This class will meet in Missoula, Montana. We will meet at various locations in the Missoula area for classroom and field-based instruction. Students should expect to get wet and dirty when fishing so wear suitable clothing and footwear. Students need to supply a hat and sunglasses or eyeglasses to wear when casting a fly rod with a fly.

Planned Itinerary

July 28 

Fly to Missoula, MT – hotel shuttle to the hotel.

July 29 

Meet for breakfast. Morning instruction at hotel. Lunch on your own. On-the-river instruction beginning at 1pm. Have dinner on the river

July 30

Meet for breakfast. On-the-river instruction beginning at ~8am. Lunch on the river. Dinner on your own.

July 31

Half-day instruction (off-the-river). Half-day to explore Missoula and relax.

August 1

Meet for breakfast. On-the-river instruction beginning at ~8am. Lunch on the river. Dinner on your own.

August 2

 Meet for breakfast. On-the-river instruction beginning at ~8am. Lunch on the river. Dinner on your own.

August 3

Meet for breakfast. Half-day to explore Missoula. Say goodbye to your new friends as the program ends and depart for home.
