Gender, Sexuality, Race and Ethnicity, Work, and Japan.

I teach the following courses regularly: Sociology of Modern Japan; Gender and Work; Race, Class and Gender; Race and Ethnic Relations; and Introductory Sociology. I am happy to talk with undergraduate and graduate students who have interests in research on gender, race, work, and Japan.

Research Interests

Gender and Sexuality; Race and Ethnicity; Work and Organizations; Qualitative Methodology; Japan

During the last few years, I have examined changing patterns of marriage and work in Japan in comparison with those in the United States. I am currently completing a second book manuscript. This book, based on sixty-four in-depth interviews with workers in five large companies in Japan and Japanese feminist NGOs, asks why gender inequality persists in Japanese companies, and identifies organizational constraints and structural problems that contribute to it.
