SKyTeach Co-Director travels to China to train Hanban Teachers

Dr. S. Kay Gandy and Dr. Martha M. Day, faculty members from the School of Teacher Education at WKU, recently returned from a trip to Beijing, China, where they trained theConfucius Institute’s Hanban Volunteer Chinese Teachers to meet Kentucky Teacher Standards.

The Volunteer Teachers program was set up to meet shortages of Chinese teachers in foreign countries. The Hanban Institute, governed by the Ministry of Education in China, is responsible for implementing the program in 90 countries around the world.

Dr. Gandy and Dr. Day provided 30 hours of training to Chinese teachers who are seeking Kentucky teacher certification and plan teach Chinese in Kentucky schools during the 2013-2014 academic year. Each teacher applicant will submit a portfolio documenting their proficiency at meeting each of the 10 Kentucky teacher standards. The portfolios will be reviewed and assessed by a team of School of Teacher Education faculty members in June.  Successful applicants will receive Kentucky teacher licensure and will arrive at WKU in July to receive further training.

Great Wall

WKU faculty and staff (from left) Dr. Martha Day, Dr. S. Kay Gandy and Betty Yu visited the Great Wall at Mutianyu during their recent trip to China.

During the training, the Hanban volunteer teachers learned about the Common Core Standards, creating and maintaining a learning climate, designing and planning instruction, implementing and managing instruction, assessing and communicating learning results, implementing technology, reflecting and evaluating teaching and learning, collaboration with colleagues and parents, and leadership within the school and community. One volunteer teacher said: “I did not know that I could teach all of these different ways.”  The teachers enthusiastically engaged in activities that prepared them to teach effectively and to meet the needs of American students.

Sheng-Huei “Betty” Yu, Associate Director for Educational Outreach of the Confucius Institute at WKU, traveled to Beijing to assist Dr. Gandy and Dr. Day in helping to prepare the volunteer teachers for their respective teaching practices in the United States.

Yu interacted with the teachers to address their concerns about teaching in the United States and to make arrangements for their Kentucky teaching placements. Yu will conduct training sessions with the teachers in July.  Dr. Day and Dr. Gandy will host a dinner to welcome the Hanban volunteer teachers to Kentucky.
