Undergraduate Certificates

Below is a list of undergraduate certificates available for SEAS. Please see the bottom of the page for more information on how to apply for an undergraduate certificate.

 

Floodplain Management Certificate

Reference Number: 1763
Minimum Hours for Minor: 14

This certificate has been coordinated with the Geography and Geology Department and with the Kentucky Association of Mitigation Managers. The Floodplain Management certificate requires completion of at least 13 semester hours taken by all students. The certificate provides students with basic knowledge and skills needed to implement and administer flood mitigation and recovery programs. Students develop familiarity with federal floodplain management regulations, the National Flood Insurance Program, hydrology, surveying, and tools such as Geographic Information Systems that are critical to administering an aggressive floodplain management program. Completion of the certificate requires familiarity with all aspects of floodplain management and with the impacts of floods on individuals, on property, and on regional or national economics. Students successfully completing the program are encouraged to take the Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) exam. The CFM is a nationally recognized certification and is considered a desirable qualification by many employers. 

Undergraduate students majoring may obtain this certificate by completing the following courses (14 hours): CE 160 and
CE 161, CE 300, CE 461, and GISC 316 or GEOG 310.

 

Land Surveying Certificate

Minimum Hours for Minor: 15

Undergraduate students majoring in civil engineering or post-graduate students with baccalaureate degrees in civil
engineering, mining, or agricultural engineering accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology
(ABET) may obtain a Certificate in Land Surveying (reference number 1700) in order to pursue licensure as a
professional surveyor in the state of Kentucky by completing the following courses (15 hours): AMS 163, CE 160 and
CE 161, CE 380 and CE 381, and CE 378 and CE 379.
Post-graduate students with baccalaureate degrees in majors other than civil engineering, mining or agricultural
engineering may obtain a Certificate in Land Surveying in order to pursue licensure as a professional surveyor in the
state of Kentucky.

Certificate Application Process

If you are seeking an undergraduate certificate as a stand-alone program, you will follow the standard application process at www.wku.edu/admissions based on your student classification (freshman, transfer, readmit).

If you are adding a certificate program to a bachelor's degree, please do the following the semester prior to completion of the certificate program.

Step 1: Find the Certificate Program Reference Number and Name of Program in the Undergraduate Catalog

Step 2: Complete the Undergraduate Certificate Program Form

Step 3: Obtain program approval signatures from department offering the certificate program

Step 4: Pay the $15.00 application fee on TopNet
