Mock Interviews and Personal Statement Review
When applying to professional school, the personal statement and interview are what set each student apart. Having a strong personal statement is crucial to having your application advanced to the next stage. The interview is your chance to sell yourself. It is important to be able to answer the questions in a comfortable and confident manner. Many students find it beneficial to practice with a mock interview. SC AHEC will help you compose your personal statement and will do mock interviews.
Most professional schools such as medical, dental, pharmacy, physical therapy, and veterinary schools require personal interviews as part of the application process. In fact, an invitation for a personal interview is good news, but it can be very stressful. If you receive an invitation for a personal interview, this means you are qualified to be admitted. The personal interview is your opportunity to prove to the admissions committee you belong in their school.
Most students do not have much experience with personal interviews. The South Central AHEC offers mock interviews to help students understand the interview process and provide experience in an interview format.
You should allow 2 hours for a mock interview and you should not schedule a mock interview until you have been invited for an interview. Appropriate clothing will be discussed for your interview, but it is not necessary to wear appropriate clothing for the mock interview.
Personal Statement Review
The South Central AHEC will review personal statements for students applying to medical, dental, pharmacy, physical therapy or other health professions programs. Please e-mail your personal statement in a Word document to: email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org and allow 5 days for a response.
Personal statements are very subjective and students should have more than one person review them for both grammar and content. Your personal statement should answer the question, “Why do you want a career in ________?” It should also try to capture information not available on your application and anything that will make you stand out from all the other applicants. This is not easy to do. Don’t wait until the last minute to start writing your personal statement. The best personal statements require several drafts before the final product is complete.
